A Bit of History
Our t-shirt design is inspired by the work of a local, underground Chicago group called the Jane Collective, known formally as Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation. From 1969 to 1973, when abortion was still illegal in Illinois and most of the US, Jane Collective provided an estimated 11,000 safe, accessible and clandestine abortions in the Chicagoland area.
Jane Collective was run entirely by women, all of whom had no formal medical training. They taught themselves to perform abortions to keep the process more affordable. They never turned away anyone who couldn’t pay. The group operated mostly by word of mouth, posting a few signs around the city and running some ads in indie, underground newspapers - all of which read “Pregnant? Don’t want to be? Call Jane at 643-3844”
In addition to raising money for the Chicago Abortion Fund, we wanted to create a design that honored an important piece of Chicago women’s history. As we step into a post-Roe reality for many states across the US, we look toward the women of the Jane Collective, as well as many other individuals and groups of the past, for guidance, strength, and most importantly, hope. May this shirt be a symbol of these crucial things.
